Book Review: The Sookie Stackhouse Series

The Sookie Stackhouse series! Good heavens… where should i start. It’s been two years since vampires announced their existence. with the invention of the synthetic blood, it is supposedly safe for vampires to interact with human. Well, turn out vampires weren’t the only creatures in hiding. In the course of about 13 books, you will find mystical creatures from various mythologies including fairies, were animals and maenads. Cool… now Sookie is the lead and she works at a bar and her boss is one of the supes. Then the entire series unfolds when she meets a vampire and her brother is accused of murder, while someone very close to her is killed. She also tends to bounce around men, and every book leaves her mortally wounded.

Sookie Stackhouse

I am so so so sorry for including spoiler but… this rant has been long overdue!

The first ten ish  books were amazing. They were so good that I always pre-ordered them before the release date. They were entertaining and juicy and sexy. I mean Bill and Sookie dating was like i saw that coming but he is still super cool. And the entire time, Eric is making ploys to get in bed with Sookie and I’m like “go with the hotter and richer one.” I was particularly insistent on this, especially when i found out Bill cheated on her and planned on leaving her for his maker and Ex lover. Then there is Alcide who likes Sookie but is hung up on his ex, Debbie Pelt. And then Sookie flat out killed the bitch. Btw, Sookie also killed Bill’s maker. So Alcide is officially single. And I’m like “him, him, him, him, him!” But then, this is about the same time Eric was cursed by the witch and lost his memory. He was such an amazing temporary and caring tenant, very unlike Eric, and she screwed him and also started catching feelings! GASP! Alcide vs Eric! Go with the six-foot blonde that looks like a god and is as awesome in bed! #TeamEric Did I mention that all this while, Sam, Sookie’s boss at the bar is also pinning for her attention. But my guy was stuck in the ultimate friend-zone. Or so i thought. Hmmm…. who am i forgetting in this love drama. Ah Quin! A were tiger! He is white, bald, tall, sexy, dangerous and a gladiator! Yes, he did some pit fighting to work off his mother’s debt. Now Sookie dated him after the whole Bill-Eric thing.

Now, here is my problem with the story. Sookie broke up with Bill because he cheated. That really flipping hurts, book or nah. Now, i get why she never dated or slept with Alcide. His heart was elsewhere. I also get why she slept with Eric during his amnesiac period, which he totally forgot when the curse was reversed. I like Quin and i really really hoped Sookie and him would end together. But, Miss Most-Wanted thought he had too many family baggage and was being super self-centered by saying she wanted a guy to put her first. Huh! Cool stuff! And then, somewhere in between the action and death and hostile take overs of the vampire queen and sheriffs, Eric gets his memories back and he and Sookie start dating then get married vampire-style. I have read the entire series more times than i feel like admitting to myself, and my impression of it was that the whole series was leading up to Eric and Sookie together. The flirting, the covert missions, the exchange of blood, the healing, the favoritism. i could go on. So why in the bloody world does Sookie end up with Sam?

There was some vague part of on of the books where Sookie imagined she’d live in a house with a husband and a child and have breakfast and the likes in the morning. And as i said before, that was vague and never actually expanded upon. Charlaine Harris did an amazing job building on all the other romances, except for this one. I mean, a lot went down in book 12. Sookie got a cluvieldor, or in layman terms, a wish stone, to grant one single wish. She had inherited it from her grandmother. At the same time, Eric’s maker Appius Levius Ocella started negotiations behind Eric’s back for him to marry one of the queens of a different region. Apparently, Eric expected Sookie to give him the wish stone, except she didn’t. She used it to bring Sam back to life. Which made Eric mad, and somehow in the middle of the mess, there is one of the most awkward sex scenes i have ever read between Sookie and Sam at the end of book 13. I mean fuck! Did i really read 13 books for a shitty ending?

The reason we pick up pulp fiction and romance like this is so we can read and get engrossed in a world where the love between two people is so intense that it transcends reasoning and speak to a place within us that believes in true love and lust and compassion and evokes within us the most extreme passion. Therefore, it is pretty much a given that the couple all the fans are rooting for end up together! There should be a reader/author contract for this!

Beside my obvious anger at Sookie’s romance, there is her awful wardrobe, and the whole Devil thing that goes unexplained. the 13th book seemed unfinished and awful. Honestly, I’m not particularly attached to who Sookie ends up with as long as it is believable. The whole scene with Sam came out of nowhere, and blindsided me. It was a really horrible ending for all the characters in the book and didn’t do justice to them considering about 12 books of character development. The book felt more like a filler with the express purpose of screwing over it’s entire audience. 13 books. I really really thought it could and should have been better!

Advice: If you are familiar with the series, finish it. If not, Start and maybe stop at book 10 or 11 or skip this all together.
